So, here's a question for you all. Am I the only one who thinks spiking the football late in a game or half is stupid? I mean a team still has to get lined up to spike the ball, so in reality a team isn't saving any time and is throwing away a down. One never can know how important that down could end up being.
I don't see why teams don't just run a pass play. An incomplete pass would accomplish the same goal as a spike and there is an opportunity for a successful pass play. Even if a play isn't called, running the same play again or having a go-to play would be better than the wasted down.
I can really only think of one scenario in which spiking the football seems like a good idea. That would be to stop the clock prior to an attempted field goal prior to the half or one to win or tie the game. Otherwise, throw the ball at a receiver and potentially make a big play rather than throw the ball at the ground.
Anyways, another short and rambling post today. What do you think? Am I missing something about this?
Thanks for reading and please comment.
